the art of integration
There is something so lovely about a kitchen that feels considered from every angle. Not every element needs to be on display, and sometimes, what you choose to conceal makes just as much of a difference as what you choose to highlight.
Hidden appliances have long been a favourite in our designs, and for good reason. From panel-ready refrigerators to integrated dishwashers and cleverly concealed appliance storage, these details allow a kitchen to feel less like a collection of appliances and cabinetry, and more like a thoughtfully designed space that works beautifully as a whole.
seamless simplicity
One of the things we love most about integrated appliances is the sense of continuity they bring to a kitchen. A refrigerator concealed behind custom millwork, or a dishwasher finished with a matching cabinet front, allows the cabinetry to take centre stage without the visual interruption of stainless steel or other appliance finishes.
The result is a kitchen that feels quieter, more cohesive, and inherently timeless. Rather than drawing your eye to individual appliances, the focus remains on the details that give a space its character.
clever concealment
Some of the most useful details in a kitchen are the ones you don't notice at first glance. Creating a dedicated home for the appliances you use every day keeps countertops clear while keeping everything you need close at hand.
Think coffee machines, toasters, kettles, and all the little things that tend to find their way onto the counter. Tucked neatly behind cabinetry, they are there when you need them and disappear from view when you don't.
I love this detail in my own kitchen at #thecpdhouse. Our coffee maker and other everyday appliances have a dedicated home behind the cabinetry, keeping the countertops clear and the kitchen feeling calm and uncluttered. It's one of those seemingly small design decisions that makes a noticeable difference to how the space feels every day.
For me, this is where good kitchen design really shines.
practical planning
The best time to think about hidden appliances is early in the design process. The way you use your kitchen, the appliances you rely on, and the cabinetry layout all play a role in determining what can be tucked away and where.
A dedicated coffee station, for example, needs more than a place to park your coffee maker. Electrical outlets, counter space, storage for mugs and supplies, and enough clearance to comfortably use everything with the doors open all need to be considered. The same goes for larger integrated appliances, where dimensions, ventilation, and cabinetry details must be coordinated well before installation.
These are the details that can easily be overlooked, but they're an important part of what we do for our clients. From the initial design through to the finer specifications, we take care of the planning and coordination behind the scenes, ensuring these practical elements are thoughtfully integrated into the overall design. It's this attention to detail that allows the finished kitchen to feel effortless, both in how it looks and how it functions.
Whether you're planning a full kitchen renovation or refining the details of a new build, we're here to help bring all the pieces together. From the larger design decisions to the details you may not have thought of, we believe it's what happens behind the scenes that makes a kitchen feel truly complete.
