frequently asked

Before a project begins, there are a handful of questions that come up time and time again, often from those considering what it means to work with a designer and what that experience truly entails.

They are important questions. Beyond aesthetics, a well run project is rooted in clarity, trust, and the assurance that every detail will be thoughtfully handled.

I have come to see these early conversations as a natural starting point, and an opportunity to offer insight into how we guide our clients, manage each layer of the process, and create a design experience that feels considered from beginning to end.

“Where should I save vs. splurge?”

This is often the first question and one of the most defining.

Our approach is always to prioritize what is permanent. Millwork, flooring, plumbing fixtures, and architectural details shape how a home functions and endures over time, and they are not easily revisited. These foundational elements require a level of investment that supports both longevity and daily use.

From there, we thoughtfully layer in furnishings, lighting, and decor with a degree of flexibility. These elements allow a space to evolve, shift, and be refreshed over time without requiring a full renovation.

It is not simply about where to spend more or less, but about making informed decisions that support the overall vision while ensuring the home functions beautifully for years to come.

“How long will this take?”

Timelines are an essential part of setting expectations, but they are also closely tied to the level of detail and customization within a project.

Design is a process of coordination across trades, materials, and bespoke elements. Each layer requires time, precision, and careful sequencing. From custom millwork to lead times on finishes and furnishings, every decision contributes to the overall timeline.

While we provide a clear roadmap from the outset, we also guide our clients through the understanding that truly tailored spaces cannot be rushed. The most considered interiors are the result of patience, thoughtful planning, and a process that is managed with intention from beginning to end.

“Can you work with what I already have?”

Absolutely, when it is approached with intention.

Incorporating existing pieces is rarely about keeping everything, but rather about curating what remains. Pieces that hold special meaning or align with the overall direction can be seamlessly integrated, often in ways that feel refreshed and elevated within the new design.

At times, this may involve reupholstering, refinishing, or reimagining how a piece is used within the space. In other cases, it requires a more considered edit to ensure the home feels cohesive and resolved.

Our role is to guide that process with clarity, ensuring that every element contributes to a unified and thoughtful result.

“What if I don’t know my style?”

This is more common than not and entirely expected.

Clients are not meant to arrive with a defined aesthetic. Instead, our role is to interpret preferences, understand how a home needs to function, and translate that into a cohesive and enduring design language.

I don’t believe in designing to trends or creating spaces that feel momentary. Our focus is on developing interiors that feel deeply personal, grounded in how our clients live, and reflective of what will continue to resonate over time.

That often means drawing from classic principles, thoughtful proportions, and timeless materials, while layering in elements that feel specific and individual to each client.

The process is collaborative, but always guided, resulting in a home that feels both personal and considered without needing to fit into a singular category.

“Can I work with a designer on a smaller budget?”

Working with a designer does not need to begin with a full service project.

For many clients, a focused consultation or a more defined scope of work provides the clarity needed to move forward with confidence. Whether it is refining a layout, selecting key finishes, or establishing a plan that can be implemented over time, even a measured level of guidance can have a meaningful and lasting impact.

This approach allows for thoughtful decision making from the outset, helping to avoid costly missteps while ensuring that each layer of the home is aligned with a clear and cohesive vision.

Our role remains the same regardless of scope. We guide, refine, and bring structure to the process so that every decision feels considered and every detail is accounted for.

Each of these questions is part of the natural consideration that comes before beginning a project. When approached with clarity, the experience becomes more seamless and far more enjoyable from the start.

At Candace Plotz Design, we are here to guide and thoughtfully manage every detail so our clients feel supported, considered, and at ease throughout the entire process.
