fall into it

There’s a moment every September when the house begins to feel a little different.

The windows stay open a little less. The evenings arrive a little earlier. The garden starts to retreat, and suddenly, we find ourselves craving something cozier.

Deeper colours, softer textures and rooms that feel like they’re ready to wrap themselves around us.

Fall, in my opinion, is less about decorating for a season and more about settling into one.

It’s the time of year when we naturally begin to layer our homes the way we layer ourselves.

a deeper look

Summer has its whites, creams and sun-washed tones, however fall invites us to turn the dial.

Think tobacco, olive, aubergine, oxblood, chocolate, ochre and the occasional moody blue. You don't need to repaint the room or replace the sofa. Sometimes a velvet pillow, a wool throw, a darker-toned piece of art or a stack of well-loved books is enough to shift the overall feeling. Colour doesn't have to shout to make an impact.

a natural connection

Fall is generous when it comes to decorating materials.

Branches, dried hydrangeas, seed heads, apples, pears and late-season garden clippings can all become part of the landscape inside your home. There is something particularly beautiful about arrangements that feel a little imperfect and slightly wild.

Let the season do some of the styling for you.

places to pause

As the calendar fills with school schedules, work, dinners and the general rhythm of September, home becomes increasingly important as a place to retreat.

Think about where you naturally want to curl up.

Is there a chair that could use a better reading light? Could the coffee table be cleared enough for a cup of tea and a book? Would a bench, ottoman or small side table make a room more functional?

Good design isn't simply about how a room looks. It's about how it makes you want to live in it.

And fall is the perfect excuse to make your home a little more inviting.

There’s a tendency to think of September as a month for starting over, which often includes new routines, new schedules, and new goals.

But perhaps home doesn't need a complete reset. Perhaps it simply needs a little editing.

Move something. Layer something. Bring out the pieces you've tucked away. Light a candle. Put the kettle on. Add the throw you've been saving.

Let your rooms become a little moodier, a little softer and a lot more inviting.

Because the best part of fall isn't necessarily the changing leaves outside. It's the feeling of coming home.
