a study in tile

Once considered a purely practical finish, tile has become one of the most interesting ways to introduce character, texture, and personality into a home. From time-honoured patterns and traditional layouts to the subtle beauty of natural stone and handmade finishes, we’re taking a closer look at a material that offers far more than meets the eye.

classic charm

Some design elements never really go out of style. They simply find new ways to feel relevant and tile is one of them.

Checkerboard floors, intricate patterns, decorative borders, and traditional mosaics have long been part of beautiful interiors. Today, we’re seeing these familiar details interpreted in fresh ways, bringing a sense of history and charm to both classic and contemporary spaces.

Whether it's a patterned floor in an entryway, a beautifully detailed backsplash in the kitchen, or a little something unexpected in a powder room, tile offers an opportunity to introduce personality without overwhelming a space.

And sometimes, it's the simplest of patterns that makes the most lasting impression.

pattern & polish

Beyond colour and pattern, much of tile’s appeal lies in the finer details. The subtle variations of a handmade finish, the texture of an imperfect surface, the depth of a rich colour, or the way light catches a beautifully finished tile all contribute to its character.

The decisions that follow are just as important. The scale and shape of the tile, the direction in which it's laid, the grout colour, and the overall layout can each influence the finished look.

We particularly love seeing tile paired with warm wood tones, beautiful cabinetry, and aged metals. These combinations create a lovely sense of depth and contrast, allowing each finish to complement the next without competing for attention.

Because, as with so many things in design, it's not simply about the individual elements, but how they come together.

timeless touches

One of the things we love most about tile is its ability to bring individuality to a space. A traditional pattern can add a sense of heritage, a handmade finish can introduce warmth, and an unexpected shape or colour can give an otherwise understated room a little personality.

The key is knowing where to introduce it and how much is enough. Not every surface needs to make a statement. Sometimes a beautifully selected floor or a thoughtfully detailed backsplash is all a room needs.

We always encourage looking beyond what's popular at the moment and considering the materials, finishes, and patterns that genuinely resonate with you. After all, the most beautiful homes aren't defined by following trends, but by the layers, details, and personal touches that make them feel entirely their own.

And tile, in all its forms, offers plenty of opportunity to do just that.

At Candace Plotz Design, we believe it's the thoughtful selection and layering of materials that give a home its character. From the grandest details to the smallest finishes, every choice has a part to play in creating a home that feels collected, considered, and distinctly personal.
