the art of a well considered home

There’s a difference between a beautiful home and a home that feels truly considered.

And while I absolutely believe quality matters, I don’t think a beautiful home is simply a collection of expensive things.

It’s about how everything comes together.

The scale of a room. The way the drapery falls. The warmth of the lighting. The texture of the materials. The hardware on a cabinet door.

These details are often subtle, but together, they create that feeling you get when you walk into a room and everything just feels right.

So let’s talk about some of the things that can take a home from beautiful to truly considered.

perfect proportions

If something in a room feels a little off, one of the first things I look at is scale.

I’m not talking about a large room, because I love a small, intimate room just as much as a larger one. What matters is that the scale feels right for the space.

A rug that is large enough for the furniture. A light fixture with enough presence for the room. Artwork that feels balanced on the wall. A coffee table that relates properly to the sofa. Furniture that feels appropriately sized for the space rather than simply fitting into it.

These details can completely change how a room feels.

This is why we spend so much time on furniture floor plans before we start selecting the pretty things. If the proportions aren’t right, the most beautiful furniture in the world isn’t going to fix the room.

luxurious layers

Once the proportions are right, it’s time to think about what gives a room depth and character.

This is where the materials you choose really start to matter, and this is the time to be selective about where you invest.

Hardwood floors, natural stone countertops, a well-made sofa, custom cabinetry or a beautifully crafted piece of furniture can all have a lasting impact. These are the elements you live with for years, so invest in things that are going to stand the test of time.

Lighting plays a big role here, too. I much prefer a combination of pendants, sconces, lamps, picture lights and accent lighting rather than relying on one source of overhead lighting. It creates atmosphere and allows the room to change throughout the day.

Think about how you want your home to feel at 8 pm, not just how you need it to function at 8 am.

Warm bulbs, dimmers and multiple sources of light can completely change the atmosphere of a room.

That’s what gives a home its soul.

personal pieces

The final piece, for me, is making a home feel personal.

This is where I like to move beyond simply choosing beautiful things and think about what gives a home its character. The pieces that tell you something about the people who live there, where they’ve been and what they love.

Maybe it’s an antique that has been collected over time, a piece of art with a story behind it, a chair found while travelling, or a family piece that has been given a new life.

I love the balance of fresh and found. A beautiful new kitchen can feel so much more interesting with an antique piece of furniture nearby. A room doesn’t need to feel perfectly matched or overly coordinated. In fact, I think a little bit of surprise is what makes it interesting.

These are the details that make a home feel collected rather than simply furnished. They give a room a sense of history, even when everything around them is new.

Ultimately, the details should tell a story. They should make you curious about who lives there, where they’ve been and what they love.

When I’m designing a home, I’m rarely thinking about one detail in isolation.

I’m thinking about how everything works together.

Quality matters. Good craftsmanship matters. Beautiful materials matter.

But so does the feeling you create around them. A beautiful room isn’t just about having beautiful things. It’s about the balance, the character and those little unexpected details that make a space feel like it belongs to you.
