weekly design inspiration: pattern partners

Combining different fabric patterns can be tricky but it's also one of the most creative aspects of interior design! With so many beautiful patterns out there, it can feel hard to know what works well together while still creating a bold look. With some of these simple guidelines, you will be able to confidently mix and match motifs throughout your home.

scale it up

Use scale as your guide when pairing patterns of different sizes. Larger scale prints can anchor a space while smaller motifs add visual interest. For example, pair a bold floral duvet with matching pillows featuring a tiny geometric. Or mix a tweed armchair with plaid cushions! Varying scales prevents patterns from competing while creating pops of pattern throughout.

colour coordination

If patterns are too busy side by side, tie them together through consistent colours instead of exact motifs. Look for fabrics featuring shared hues but with different patterns like stripes paired with polka dots. Or combine an area rug pattern bordered in navy with navy and white checks! Similar colours make patterns visually cohesive versus matchy-matchy.

keep it solid

If you’re worried about having too much going on, try to ground busy patterns with solid fabrics for contrast and balance. A large-scale floral sofa looks less chaotic next to solid cushions rather than multiple prints together. Or place a braided rug under a window with a patterned valance. Combining large scale prints with solids keeps the eye moving throughout instead of focusing on one spot.

Design Tip: Try to think of your textiles as a narrative rather than a set collection. Do you want everything to feel as though it came from your grandma’s childhood home? Or what handmade textiles from a country farm?
